Ford recalls 1.74M vehicles over rearview camera failures affecting Bronco, Edge, Escape models

Ford recalls nearly 1.74 million cars in the U.S. over rearview camera issues affecting Broncos, Edges, Escapes, Corsairs, Aviators, and Explorers.

Ford has announced two separate recalls impacting nearly 1.74 million vehicles in the United States because of defects in rearview camera displays, which may elevate the risk of accidents, reports customreceipt.com via National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The first recall addresses certain 2021-2026 Ford Broncos and 2021-2024 Ford Edges, where an internal component within the infotainment system can overheat and cause the rearview image to fail when reversing. The second recall involves some 2020-2022 Ford Escapes and Lincoln Corsairs, as well as 2020-2024 Lincoln Aviators and Explorers, which may display an inverted or flipped rearview image.

The total affected vehicles include 849,310 Broncos and Edges and 889,950 Escapes, Corsairs, Aviators, and Explorers. According to NHTSA notices, Ford believes all of these vehicles carry the respective defects. To date, there have been no reported injuries or crashes linked to either of the recalls, but authorities warn that the issues could heighten the likelihood of collisions.

Ford is offering a free software update to fix the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) in the affected Broncos and Edges. Vehicle owners will receive notification letters by the end of the month, and the software update can be installed at dealerships or via an over-the-air update. Meanwhile, a permanent solution for the rearview display problem affecting Escapes, Corsairs, Aviators, and Explorers is still under development. Interim notifications highlighting the safety risks will be sent to owners in the coming months.
