National Guard to Remain in Washington, D.C. Through 2026 With 2,400 Troops on Patrol and Civic Duties

About 2,400 National Guard troops will remain in Washington, D.C. through 2026, performing patrols, civic tasks, and ensuring public safety, reports Baltimore Chronicle.

Federalized National Guard troops will continue their deployment in Washington, D.C. through the end of 2026, officials confirmed, reports customreceipt.com with reference to bitbetnews.com. Currently, around 2,400 members are stationed in the District. Most of these forces have been drawn from Republican-led states including Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, and Ohio, with the exception of troops from D.C. itself.

The mission, named “Make DC Safe and Beautiful,” was launched in August 2025 under the direction of President Donald Trump, as part of an initiative to increase military presence in U.S. cities for law enforcement support. While troops were withdrawn from other major cities such as Los Angeles and Chicago following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that limited presidential authority for such deployments, the president’s legal powers in Washington, D.C. allow the Guard to continue operations.

Troops have been actively patrolling public areas in the capital, including downtown Metro stations, Chinatown, and the National Mall. Guardsmen carry M17 pistols or M4 rifles for security purposes. In addition to patrols, they perform routine civic duties such as trash collection, landscaping, and graffiti removal, contributing to the upkeep of public spaces. Officials noted that the mission’s duration could be adjusted if presidential directives change.

National Guard units have increasingly been utilized for domestic missions in recent years, while still maintaining commitments abroad, including operations in Syria, Africa, and participation in large-scale training exercises in the Pacific aimed at deterring Chinese military influence.

The ongoing deployment follows a shooting incident near the White House in November 2025, which resulted in the death of Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and critical injury of Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, 24, who survived a gunshot wound to the head.
