A 22-year-old woman, Hallie Marie Tobler, was found fatally stabbed in her St. Cloud apartment Saturday evening. Tobler was the daughter of Republican Minnesota gubernatorial candidate Jeff Johnson, reports customreceipt.com. Authorities suspect that her 23-year-old husband, also from St. Cloud, inflicted the fatal wounds; charges are pending. Both Tobler and her husband were discovered inside the locked apartment, with him reported to have life-threatening injuries believed to be self-inflicted.
St. Cloud police responded to a medical emergency at an apartment on 40th Avenue South around 8:20 p.m. on Saturday. Officers confirmed Tobler had succumbed to multiple stab wounds, while her husband was hospitalized in stable condition under police custody. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting local authorities in the investigation.
Jeff Johnson, a former St. Cloud City Council member, is among several Republicans seeking the 2026 gubernatorial nomination in Minnesota. Following the death of his daughter, Johnson has suspended his campaign. The Republican Party of Minnesota expressed its condolences, stating it is “heartbroken by the tragic loss” and asking the public to support the Johnson family during this difficult time.
Minnesota House Speaker and Republican gubernatorial candidate Lisa Demuth issued a statement expressing solidarity with the family: “The Johnson family is walking through an unspeakable tragedy, and my prayers are with them every step of the way.” Another Republican candidate, Peggy Bennett, also released a statement emphasizing her support and prayers for the family.
