A shooting incident at South Carolina State University late Thursday night prompted a campus-wide lockdown that was lifted early Friday morning, reports customreceipt.com via wistv. The lockdown began at approximately 9:15 p.m. Thursday and continued until shortly after 5 a.m. Friday. University officials have confirmed that all classes for Friday are canceled.
According to the university, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) was asked to investigate the shooting. Officers from the university’s Department of Public Safety, the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety, and the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office were actively patrolling the campus throughout the lockdown.
SLED reported that the shooting occurred inside a room at the Hugine Suites housing complex. Three men were shot during the incident, with one pronounced dead at the scene and another dying after being transported to a nearby hospital. The third victim sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment. The identities of the victims have not been publicly released.
No information regarding any suspects has been shared by law enforcement authorities at this time. University officials have made counselors available to students in the aftermath of the incident, as classes remain canceled and safety precautions continue on campus.
Videos and images shared by a viewer from a local station showed a significant law enforcement presence surrounding Hugine Suites on the university campus during the lockdown.
