Alexei Navalny, the Russian opposition leader, was killed with a deadly toxin derived from Ecuadorian dart frogs, administered by the Russian state during his imprisonment in a remote Arctic penal colony, according to a joint statement by the UK, France, Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands, reports customreceipt.com via sources from theguardian. Laboratory analysis of samples taken from Navalny’s body prior to burial confirmed the presence of epibatidine, a highly potent neurotoxin found in the skin of these frogs, which is virtually nonexistent in Russia and cannot be produced by captive frogs, strongly indicating state involvement.
Navalny, who was serving a 19-year sentence, showed evidence of poisoning, with laboratory tests confirming that the dart frog toxin likely caused paralysis, respiratory arrest, and ultimately his death. Intelligence agencies concluded that only the Russian state had the capability, motive, and opportunity to carry out such an operation in the isolated Siberian penal colony, directly linking the Kremlin to the fatal attack.
Yulia Navalny, his wife, emphasized the confirmed findings on social media, stating that the toxin “causes paralysis, respiratory arrest, and a painful death” and that the evidence proves Vladimir Putin personally bears responsibility. She expressed gratitude to the European states for their extensive two-year investigation uncovering the circumstances of her husband’s death.
The UK has classified the poisoning as barbaric and announced it will report Russia to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons for violating the Chemical Weapons Convention. British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said, “Only the Russian government had the means, motive, and opportunity to deploy this lethal toxin against Alexei Navalny,” highlighting Russia’s historical use of poison against political opponents, including the cases of Alexander Litvinenko, Sergei Skripal, and prior attacks on Navalny himself.
The release of these findings coincided with the Munich Security Conference, marking the anniversary of Navalny’s death and drawing renewed international attention to Russia’s use of chemical agents against its critics. The UK, along with European partners, confirmed that Russia has not destroyed all chemical weapons as previously claimed and continues to retain capabilities for biological and toxin weapons, violating international conventions.
