Presidents’ Day will be observed nationwide on Monday, Feb. 16, 2026, marking a federal holiday dedicated to honoring President George Washington’s birthday and the legacy of U.S. presidents, reports customreceipt.com via houstonchronicle. As with other federal holidays, schools, government institutions and numerous employers across the United States will suspend regular operations, creating a three-day weekend for many Americans.
Presidents’ Day is traditionally celebrated on the third Monday of February each year. In 2026, the observance falls on Feb. 16. The holiday, originally established to commemorate George Washington’s birthday, has evolved into a broader recognition of the nation’s presidential history.
Most banks across the country will close their physical branches on Monday in observance of the federal holiday. As Presidents’ Day is recognized as an official bank holiday, in-person services will be unavailable until operations resume on Tuesday, Feb. 17. The Federal Reserve will also be closed. However, automated teller machines and online banking platforms will continue functioning, allowing customers to conduct withdrawals, deposits and digital transactions without interruption.
The U.S. Postal Service will suspend regular operations for the day. All post office branches will remain closed on Feb. 16, and standard residential and business mail delivery will not take place. Mail services are scheduled to resume on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026.
Private delivery companies will continue operating, though with adjustments in some cases. UPS will maintain its delivery services during Presidents’ Day. FedEx will also operate, but the company has indicated that certain services will run on a modified schedule, according to information available on its official website.
Retail operations are expected to proceed largely without disruption. Most major grocery chains will remain open, including Walmart and Target. Membership-based and regional retailers such as Costco, Sam’s Club and HEB are also scheduled to operate on Presidents’ Day. Store hours may vary by location, but closures are not anticipated for these major chains.
Restaurants nationwide are generally expected to maintain regular business hours during the holiday. Dining establishments, including both independent venues and national chains, typically remain open on Presidents’ Day.
Financial markets, however, will pause trading activities. The U.S. stock market will be closed on Monday in observance of the federal holiday. Both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq will suspend trading for the day. U.S. bond markets will also be closed. Market activity is scheduled to resume on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
