Ali Khamenei Killed in Israeli Airstrike on Tehran Residence, Reuters Reports Body Found Under Rubble

Israeli and global media report Ali Khamenei killed in an airstrike on his Tehran residence; Reuters says his body was found under the rubble.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, along with Israeli and international media outlets, reported that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in an Israeli strike on Tehran, reports customreceipt.com via Reuters.

On the evening of February 28, Netanyahu stated that there were strong indications that Khamenei had been eliminated during Israeli strikes on Iranian territory. “There are many signs that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed as a result of the strike,” media outlets quoted him as saying.

At 21:42, The Times of Israel reported, citing an Israeli official, that Khamenei had been killed earlier that morning in an airstrike. According to Axios journalist Barak Ravid, Israeli representatives had already informed the United States about the development.

Citing a source familiar with the matter, it was reported that Israel’s ambassador to Washington, Yechiel Leiter, notified American officials that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had been killed in an Israeli strike targeting his residence.

Around 21:50, Reuters, referring to its own source, stated that Khamenei had indeed been killed and that his body had been located. Israel’s Channel 12 reported that the body was found beneath the rubble of the Supreme Leader’s residence.

Satellite imagery released by Airbus, dated the morning of February 28, showed extensive damage to the residence in Tehran following the strike.

Ali Khamenei, who was born into the family of a high-ranking Muslim cleric, became President of Iran in 1981. In 1989, he assumed the position of Supreme Leader of Iran, the country’s highest authority. After taking office, he consolidated significant power within the Iranian political system.

Under Iran’s constitutional framework, the next Supreme Leader is to be selected by the Assembly of Experts, a body composed of 88 members. Half of the council’s members are appointed directly by the Supreme Leader.

Among the figures mentioned as potential successors are three senior theologians as well as the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament. There have also been reports suggesting that Khamenei intended for his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, to succeed him.
