Elon Musk Announces Terafab Chip Factory in Austin for Tesla, SpaceX Robotics Projects

Elon Musk announces Terafab, the world’s largest chip factory in Austin, Texas, to produce chips for Tesla, SpaceX, robotics, and space projects.

Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, has announced plans to build the largest chip manufacturing facility in the world, reports customreceipt.com via X. The project, named Terafab, is expected to cost over $20 billion and will consolidate Musk’s technology ventures, including Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, under one advanced manufacturing operation.

The facility will be located at the Advanced Technology Fab site in Austin, Texas, where Tesla’s headquarters are based. Terafab is designed to produce two main types of microchips. The first will power Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system and Optimus robots, while the second will be high-performance chips intended for space exploration and advanced aerospace applications. Musk emphasized that current chip suppliers cannot meet the projected demand of his companies, making the new factory essential. “We either build Terafab, or we won’t have chips. And we need chips, so we are going to build Terafab,” he stated.

The announcement comes amid a pattern of ambitious Musk projects, some of which have faced delays or remain unrealized, such as the Hyperloop transportation concept. Despite this, the scale of Terafab represents a significant leap in chip manufacturing, potentially reshaping global supply chains for robotics and space technologies. Construction is expected to begin in the coming months, with Musk’s companies integrating the facility’s output across multiple high-tech applications.

Terafab is projected to serve as a central hub for innovation, allowing Musk’s enterprises to reduce dependency on external suppliers while accelerating development in artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, robotics, and space exploration. Analysts note that a single consolidated chip manufacturing operation of this magnitude could position Musk’s companies at the forefront of semiconductor production globally.
