Lake America is now the name the U.S. federal government must use for Lake Ontario under President Donald Trump’s new order. Trump signed the directive on August 27, saying the change was “effective immediately,” as reports customreceipt.com.
The move comes during a sharp U.S.-Canada trade dispute. The White House executive order directs federal agencies to adopt the new name. ABC News also reported Trump’s announcement from the Oval Office.
What Trump’s Lake America order changes
The directive tells Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to formally implement the Lake America name within 30 days. The Geographic Names Information System must then remove federal references to Lake Ontario.
Federal maps, contracts, documents and agency communications will use the new designation. The order does not require Canada or international organizations to adopt it.
The main provisions are:
- U.S. federal agencies will use Lake America.
- The Interior Department has 30 days to implement the change.
- Federal geographic databases must be updated.
- Canada is not legally required to use the new name.
The distinction matters because Lake Ontario is shared by both countries. Its northern and western shores are Canadian, while New York borders the south and east.
Why Trump renamed Lake Ontario
The White House linked the decision to American economic and strategic interests in the Great Lakes. Its order cites shipping, energy, drinking water and U.S. investment in the region.

Trump also argued that the deepest portions of the lake lie within U.S. territory. His administration described the waterway as an important American commercial and historical asset.
The renaming is primarily a federal U.S. naming decision, not an international change to the lake’s legal geography.
Lake America dispute comes amid U.S.-Canada trade tensions
The decision follows the breakdown of trade negotiations between Washington and Ottawa. Reuters reported that Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office had not immediately responded.
Canada has already announced retaliatory tariffs amid the wider dispute. New Canadian countermeasures are scheduled to take effect on September 8, 2026.
The Lake America order therefore adds a symbolic dispute to an increasingly serious economic confrontation. Whether private map services adopt the name remains a separate question.
