Philadelphia is preparing to mark the 31st annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 19, 2026, offering a wide array of volunteer opportunities for residents and visitors, reports customreceipt.com via WHYY News. Established through federal legislation co-authored by Pennsylvania Senator Harris Wofford and Atlanta Congressman John Lewis, MLK Day of Service has grown from a local initiative in 1996 with 1,000 volunteers into a nationwide effort engaging hundreds of thousands each year. Philadelphia continues to host what organizers describe as the largest single-day MLK volunteer event in the country.
This year, Temple University will serve as the central hub for volunteer activity in the Philadelphia region for the first time in more than 15 years. The theme for the 2026 Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service focuses on advancing civil rights through education and equity. Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker announced the city’s plans alongside Todd Bernstein, founder and director of the event and president of the nonprofit Global Citizen. Bernstein emphasized that Dr. King viewed quality education as essential to breaking cycles of poverty and achieving social change, while noting that challenges persist, including federal attempts to diminish the teaching of historical racism, slavery, and segregation.
Temple University’s campus will host a variety of service projects, including workshops promoting year-round civic engagement, a children’s carnival with educational activities, a noon rally advocating for peace and justice, and Reading Captains training as part of a citywide early literacy initiative. Volunteers will also assemble “book arks” to provide free books in underserved neighborhoods and prepare hygiene kits for individuals experiencing homelessness. Additionally, the event will feature a jobs fair, a health and wellness fair, and activities suitable for families.
The day will conclude at 3 p.m. with the Philadelphia Orchestra’s annual MLK Day tribute concert, held for the first time at the Marian Anderson Hall in the Kimmel Center. Attendance is free, with online ticket reservations available. Concurrently, the Kimmel Center will host a food drive in partnership with Philabundance, encouraging residents to donate non-perishable items to support local families facing food insecurity.
