The 2026 Winter Olympics officially begin on February 6 in Italy, with the opening ceremonies staged across multiple cities including Milan, Cortina, Livigno, and Predazzo, reports customreceipt.com via WIRED. The Olympic flame will first arrive in Milan on February 5 before moving to San Siro stadium for the main celebrations, with additional cauldrons lit in Arco della Pace in Milan and Piazza Dibona in downtown Cortina to mark this unprecedented multi-location format.
The opening ceremonies, described by Milano Cortina Olympics managing director Andrea Varnier as a gateway to the Games, will feature around 4,000 participants including technicians, designers, volunteers, and performers. Creative director Marco Balich emphasized the central theme of “harmony,” showcasing the connection between Italian cities, surrounding mountains, nature, and humanity. Attendees can expect tributes to historical figures such as Leonardo da Vinci and Christopher Columbus, along with a spotlight on fashion designer Giorgio Armani.
The Winter Games will conclude on February 22 with a closing ceremony at the Arena di Verona, the oldest sports stadium still in use. Named “Beauty in Motion,” the event aims to highlight Italy’s cultural and artistic heritage, while demonstrating technological stage innovations designed by Alfredo Accatino, president of Filmmaster. Over 800 individuals, including musicians, dancers, and volunteers, will participate, culminating in the traditional handover to the host of the 2030 Winter Olympics in the French Alps.
The Olympic torch, minimalistic in design to focus attention on the flame, began its 63-day, 7,500-mile journey from Olympia, Greece, on November 25 before traveling to all 110 Italian provinces. The torch relay will include over 10,000 bearers, consisting mainly of volunteers but also Italian Olympic and Paralympic athletes, past champions, and a few celebrities such as Jackie Chan and stars from Heated Rivalry.
The ceremonies mark a first in Olympic history by extending beyond a single stadium, reflecting both the geographical spread of events and the effort to allow all athletes to participate fully in the opening celebrations. Organizers aim to combine tradition, Italian culture, and modern spectacle in a format expected to captivate millions worldwide.
