Florida State offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn has announced his retirement from coaching after 35 years in the profession, effective immediately. Head coach Mike Norvell has promoted co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Tim Harris Jr. to become the Seminoles’ primary offensive coordinator, reports customreceipt.com via Seminoles. Malzahn, who joined Florida State 14 months ago, expressed gratitude to Norvell and emphasized his intention to spend more time with family while continuing to follow the Seminoles’ progress.
During the 2025 season, Florida State led the Atlantic Coast Conference in both total offense and rushing offense, marking the second time in four years the program achieved this feat. The Seminoles averaged 472.1 yards per game, ranking sixth nationally, while their 218.7 rushing yards per contest represented the highest single-season total since 1995. FSU recorded nine 400-yard games and, for the first time in program history, had consecutive games exceeding 700 total yards. Notably, Florida State gained 775 yards against Kent State, including a school-record 498 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns, the most yards by any team nationally in 2025 and the highest single-game total since 2020.
Coach Norvell acknowledged Malzahn’s contributions, stating, “He did an outstanding job coordinating our offense and setting a strong foundation. Tim Harris fully understands our offensive system and is ready to lead the offense in 2026 alongside returning assistant coaches.” Norvell, entering his 11th season as a head coach, has consistently produced high-powered offenses, with his teams averaging 34.6 points per game over the last decade, the third-highest among active coaches in that span. His teams have recorded multiple 5,000- and 6,000-yard seasons, and eight campaigns averaging at least 35 points per game.
Tim Harris, now Florida State’s offensive coordinator, previously held coordinator roles at UCF and FIU. Harris joined the Seminoles in 2025 as pass game coordinator and wide receivers coach, helping FSU lead the ACC in total offense, rushing offense, third-down offense, and yards per completion. The Seminoles ranked fourth nationally in yards per completion, sixth in total offense, eighth in third-down conversion rate, and 13th in rushing. Under Harris’ guidance, first-team All-ACC receiver and Biletnikoff Award semifinalist Duce Robinson amassed 1,081 receiving yards on 56 catches with six touchdowns, reaching the program’s 14th 1,000-yard receiving season. Teammate Micahi Danzy contributed 571 receiving yards and 227 rushing yards, combining for six total touchdowns. Together, Robinson and Danzy produced eight individual 100-yard receiving games.
Harris’ prior achievements include leading UCF’s offense to top national rushing rankings in 2024 and guiding FIU through record-setting seasons from 2015 to 2020. At Booker T. Washington High School in Miami, he served as head coach, producing a perfect 14-0 season in 2014, winning the 4A state championship, and earning a No. 2 national ranking. His tenure at the high school level included multiple state championships in football and track & field, earning several Coach of the Year honors.
