Kohl’s closes Michigan store in Sault Ste. Marie after final clearance sale amid retail downturn 2026

Kohl’s closes Michigan store after final clearance sales as retailer cuts locations amid falling demand and rising competition.

A Kohl’s department store in Michigan has permanently closed after completing a final clearance process, marking another step in the retailer’s ongoing restructuring, reports customreceipt.com via Sun. The shutdown comes shortly after confirmation that all purchases at the location were non-returnable as the store prepared to cease operations.

The affected branch, located in the Cascade Crossing shopping center in Sault Ste. Marie near the Canadian border, served its last customers on March 14. The store had operated since 2016 and was part of Kohl’s expansion in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where it once employed around 80 staff members. Its closure follows a large-scale liquidation sale that cleared remaining inventory in the days leading up to the shutdown.

Store manager Christopher Herbert publicly confirmed the decision in late January, stating that the closure was being carried out with regret. He also clarified that all transactions during the final sales period were definitive, with no option for returns at any other Kohl’s locations.

The shutdown is part of a broader pattern of contraction across the retailer’s physical footprint. Over the past year, Kohl’s closed 27 underperforming stores across 15 U.S. states as it attempts to stabilize operations amid declining in-store traffic. The company has also reduced its corporate workforce by approximately 10% and scaled back its partnership with Amazon by discontinuing return services at selected locations.

Kohl’s CEO Michael Bender has attributed the company’s declining sales performance to persistent financial pressure on its core customer base. He noted that many shoppers in low- to middle-income brackets are increasingly focused on value-driven purchases, which has impacted spending patterns across the chain’s stores. Bender stated that the company is prioritizing operational improvements and modernization efforts throughout 2026 to reinforce its long-term business model.

The closure has raised concerns within the local business community. Tony Haller, executive director of the Sault Area Chamber of Commerce, described the trend as troubling for the region’s economic stability. He noted that the store had been a consistent retail presence for nearly a decade and played a role in attracting both local and cross-border shoppers from Canada.

The Cascade Crossing shopping center has seen multiple closures over the past ten years, including Joann Fabrics, Bath and Body Works, and Family Fare. Despite this, new tenants such as Five Below and Hobby Lobby have entered the location, partially offsetting the impact of departing retailers. Local officials have expressed hopes that vacant units will be filled to maintain consumer traffic and support surrounding businesses.

Kohl’s continues to face mounting competition from e-commerce platforms, particularly Amazon, as well as discount chains like Ross Stores. Industry data cited by Reuters indicates that shifting consumer preferences toward lower-priced alternatives and online shopping have intensified pressure on traditional department store models.
