Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version will be released on Nintendo Switch systems for the first time in more than two decades, with availability beginning February 27 to coincide with Pokémon Day, reports customreceipt.com via Nintendo.com. The titles will also be playable on the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
The two games will be offered as digital-only releases and can be purchased separately via My Nintendo Store and Nintendo eShop. Each version will be available in English, French and Spanish. The launch marks a major milestone as players celebrate 30 years of the Pokémon franchise by revisiting the Kanto region, where the original adventures unfolded.
Originally launched in 2004 as Game Boy Advance remakes of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green, which debuted in Japan in 1996, Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version recreate the foundational experience of the series while incorporating enhancements introduced during the Game Boy Advance era. On Nintendo Switch, players will once again be able to capture the original 151 Pokémon and explore classic locations that defined the early years of the franchise.
The games retain their turn-based battle system and original soundtrack, preserving the structure that established Pokémon as a global phenomenon. Players will encounter key characters including Brock, Misty, Professor Oak and Giovanni as they progress through Gyms and story events across Kanto. The Switch editions maintain gameplay mechanics added in the Game Boy Advance generation, such as Pokémon abilities, natures, weather effects, held items and the option to choose the player character’s gender.
A modern connectivity feature has also been integrated. Unlike the original 2004 Game Boy Advance versions that required a Game Link Cable for multiplayer functionality, the Nintendo Switch releases support local co-op play without additional hardware.
Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version will be available starting February 27 through My Nintendo Store and Nintendo eShop. During launch week, select retailers will also carry the titles at a suggested retail price of $19.99 (USD).
