Five-star senior Dylan Mingo has officially committed to the University of North Carolina, providing head coach Hubert Davis with another top-15 recruit and continuing a streak of high-level signings for the Tar Heels, reports customreceipt.com via ESPN. Mingo, a 6-foot-5 point guard from Long Island Lutheran High School in New York, selected North Carolina over Baylor, Penn State, and Washington, after previously visiting UConn, Miami, and Alabama during the fall recruitment period.
Mingo highlighted the influence of current Tar Heel players Caleb Wilson and Seth Trimble in shaping his decision. “I felt like now was the right time,” he said in an interview with ESPN. “Seeing Caleb Wilson and Seth Trimble wear the North Carolina blue with so much pride shows the true culture they have there. I chose UNC because it felt like a family environment, from the players, fans, to the coaches. The program’s history and the legacy of everyone who played here is huge. Their will to win is always at the highest level, and I want to be a part of that.”
While North Carolina’s historical focus under former coach Roy Williams emphasized top-tier big men, this year’s commitment aligns with the program’s tradition of producing high-level perimeter players, exemplified by Caleb Wilson and Henri Veesaar. Davis’ tenure has featured numerous standout guards, and Mingo noted that UNC teams often run through their backcourt. “I feel like any North Carolina team in the past, especially under Coach Davis, runs through their guards. Seeing players like Leaky Black and Drake Powell, who are elite defenders with versatility, thrive there confirms that,” Mingo said.
Despite missing a majority of his high school season due to an ankle injury and sitting out last summer’s Peach Jam, Mingo was named MVP of the NBA Top 100 Camp, after averaging 23.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 6.8 assists. On the Nike EYBL circuit with the PSA Cardinals, he averaged 19.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 2.3 steals across 12 regular-season games.
Mingo is recognized for his combination of size, skill, defensive acumen, and scoring ability. His court vision and passing are notable, particularly when driving to the rim and navigating ball screens. His defensive potential is considerable given his 6-foot-10 wingspan, and while his three-point shot is still developing, he is capable from beyond the arc. “From day one, my role will be to impact winning in every aspect,” he said. “I am a person who will give it his all to win a national championship.”
Mingo becomes the second commitment for North Carolina’s 2026 recruiting class, joining SC Next 100 forward Maximo Adams (No. 25), who signed in the fall. This continues Carolina’s streak of landing a top-15 recruit in four consecutive classes, following Elliot Cadeau (2023), Ian Jackson (2024), and Caleb Wilson (2025).
