Minnesota and Colorado have reported at least 110 cases each. Officials warn that additional infections may emerge because reporting often takes several weeks.
Why Chipotle and QDOBA removed jalapeños
Traceback work found that both chains received jalapeños connected to the affected distribution network. Chipotle replaced peppers at impacted restaurants with supplies from different growers.
QDOBA removed jalapeños from all its restaurants as a precaution. The company said it was cooperating with public health authorities.
Federal officials currently see no continuing outbreak risk from eating at Chipotle or QDOBA. Both chains stopped serving the affected peppers.
Coast Citrus Distributors agreed to recall the implicated jalapeños. Restaurants and food-service businesses should discard recalled peppers or products with an uncertain supplier.
