Angel’s Envy bourbon is getting one of its most unusual finishes yet. The Louisville distillery has created a limited bourbon combining imperial stout casks with Brazilian amburana wood. Only 1% of the final blend comes from amburana-finished whiskey, as the customreceipt.com editorial team notes.
Angel’s Envy uses just 1% amburana bourbon
Amburana has divided American whiskey drinkers because its influence can become aggressive. The South American hardwood can produce strong cinnamon and baking-spice flavors.
Master Distiller Owen Martin approached it as an accent rather than the foundation. According to Food & Wine, the finished blend consists of 99% stout-finished bourbon and only 1% amburana-finished bourbon.
The base whiskey uses Angel’s Envy’s standard mashbill:
- 72% corn;
- 18% rye;
- 10% malted barley;
- 6 to 7 years of maturation.
That older bourbon was then divided between two finishing programs. The stout portion spent between 6 and 24 months in imperial stout barrels. Amburana whiskey received only 1 month in third-fill casks, reported mypacko.com.
Stout barrels bring chocolate while amburana adds spice
The Angel’s Envy Distillery Series 2026 relies heavily on reused stout barrels. They previously held beer from Goose Island and Louisville’s Trellis Brewing.
The restrained amburana component changes the profile without dominating it. Martin described the blending process as unusually iterative because the wood can quickly overpower other flavors.

When the new Angel’s Envy bourbon goes on sale
The stout and amburana bourbon launches September 10, 2026. It will be sold exclusively through the Angel’s Envy Distillery in downtown Louisville.
About 18,000 bottles are expected, according to Food & Wine. Each 375 ml bottle carries a suggested retail price of $54.99.
The distillery’s official Distillery Series page confirms the September 10 release, 50% ABV and dual stout-and-amburana finishing.
For Angel’s Envy, the experiment is less about making bourbon louder than controlling one of whiskey’s most assertive woods. One percent may be the most important number in the bottle.
