What Changed For The 78th Emmy Awards
The Television Academy has revised several categories for the 2026 competition. Outstanding Scripted Variety Series and Outstanding Talk Series were merged into one Outstanding Variety Series category.
The academy cited fewer submissions across both former categories. The Outstanding Television Movie award was also renamed Outstanding Movie.
| Competition area | Change for 2026 |
|---|---|
| Variety programs | Talk and scripted variety categories merged |
| Television movies | Category renamed Outstanding Movie |
| Short-form programs | New tracking rules introduced |
| Technical awards | Several fields expanded or reorganized |
These revisions reflect how television programs now move between traditional networks and streaming platforms. They could also produce less predictable nomination fields.
