Greg McDermott will retire as head coach of Creighton University’s men’s basketball program at the conclusion of the current season, reports customreceipt.com via ESPN. Over 16 years at Creighton, McDermott compiled 365 wins, building a career record of 514-319 across 25 Division I seasons including stints at Northern Iowa, Iowa State, and Creighton. His tenure included 13 NCAA tournament appearances and an Elite Eight run in 2023, cementing his legacy as one of the program’s most successful coaches.
McDermott expressed gratitude for his time at Creighton, highlighting the development of his players both on and off the court. “It has been an incredible honor to lead the Creighton men’s basketball program for the past 16 years,” McDermott said in a statement. “I’m very proud of the young men that have proudly worn the Bluejay uniform and represented our program in a first-class manner.”
The transition will be seamless as Alan Huss, coach-in-waiting and former Creighton alumnus, will take over the program starting with the 2026-27 season. Huss returned to the Creighton staff after stepping down from High Point University, where he led the team to an NCAA tournament appearance. He was formally positioned as coach-in-waiting in April 2025, and the timing of McDermott’s retirement allows him to step into the role without delay. “I am incredibly honored and humbled to be named the head men’s basketball coach at Creighton University,” Huss said. “This university has meant so much to me as a former player, as an alumnus, and through the seven years I’ve spent serving this program.”
McDermott’s legacy at Creighton includes guiding his son, Doug McDermott, from 2010-11 to 2013-14, and overseeing the program’s transition from the Missouri Valley Conference to the Big East. Creighton won the Big East regular-season title in 2019-20 and maintained .500 or better records in conference play in 11 of 13 seasons.
While Creighton struggled this season by the standards set during McDermott’s tenure, finishing 15-17, he will continue to coach the team through its participation in The Crown, a postseason college basketball event. McDermott’s career at Creighton also included a memorable run to the 2023 Elite Eight, narrowly missing the Final Four after a controversial last-second free throw in the NCAA tournament.
