UK Unveils “British FBI” to Combine National Crime, Counter-Terrorism, and Road Policing

The UK government announces a new National Police Service, dubbed the "British FBI," uniting crime-fighting agencies under one organization.

On Saturday, the UK government revealed plans to establish a new National Police Service, referred to as the “British FBI,” merging multiple crime-fighting agencies under a single umbrella, reports customreceipt.com with reference to Reuters.

The newly formed organization will consolidate the efforts of the National Crime Agency, which currently investigates drug trafficking and human smuggling, alongside other nationwide functions including counter-terrorism operations and the national road policing units. Once appointed, its head — the National Commissioner for Crime — will become the highest-ranking law enforcement official in the country. Presently, senior UK police officials lead the Metropolitan Police in London.

According to Reuters, the establishment of the National Police Service is part of extensive policing reforms that the government plans to announce on Monday. These changes represent the most significant restructuring of law enforcement in the UK since Sir Robert Peel founded the first professional police force in 1829.

Home Secretary Suella Mahmood stated, “The current policing model was designed for a different century. We will create a new National Police Service, dubbed the ‘British FBI,’ employing highly skilled experts and cutting-edge technology to track and apprehend dangerous criminals.” She also likened the new service to the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Currently, there are 43 local police forces operating across England and Wales, some of which carry out national-level responsibilities. For example, the Metropolitan Police in London handles counter-terrorism operations. Mahmood added that the reorganization will allow local law enforcement to focus more on everyday crimes such as shoplifting and antisocial behavior, while still ensuring criminals are apprehended within their communities.

It is also expected that the government will reduce the overall number of police forces in the UK as part of the announced reforms, aiming to optimize resources and enhance crime prevention efforts.
