Qatari-donated 747 was unveiled by President Donald Trump at Joint Base Andrews on June 19. The modified aircraft will temporarily serve as Air Force One, as noted by the customreceipt.com.
The Boeing 747-8 was previously owned by Qatar’s royal family. Trump called it the “world’s most luxurious plane” during the presentation.
Why the Qatari 747 Is Joining the Presidential Fleet
The aircraft will bridge a gap caused by delays to Boeing’s replacement program. Two permanent VC-25B presidential jets are expected in 2028.
The Air Force began modifying the donated plane in Texas in September 2025. Work included presidential communications, security systems and other classified upgrades.
| Aircraft detail | Confirmed information |
|---|---|
| Model | Boeing 747-8 |
| Estimated age | About 14 years |
| Previous owner | Qatar’s royal family |
| Temporary role | Presidential transport |
| Expected replacements | 2 Boeing VC-25B aircraft in 2028 |
The jet will operate alongside the remaining VC-25A aircraft. One existing presidential plane is currently undergoing maintenance.

Trump Praises Range, Size and New Design
Trump claimed the aircraft is nearly twice the size of the current presidential jets. He also praised its range, speed and limited need for refuelling.
The plane features a redesigned exterior and a waving American flag on its tail. Trump said the appearance better represents the United States abroad.
Key features highlighted during the unveiling included:
- Longer flight range;
- A larger cabin than existing VC-25A aircraft;
- Secure presidential communications;
- A new red, white and dark-blue design;
- About 800 recorded flight hours.
The president described those flight hours as extremely low for this aircraft type. He said the plane remains practically new.
Foreign Gift Continues to Raise Ethics Questions
The aircraft was valued at about $400 million before its conversion. Its acceptance prompted criticism from lawmakers and government ethics specialists.
Critics questioned the security costs and the scale of the foreign donation. The administration argued that the arrangement was lawful and necessary.
Current plans reportedly call for the jet’s eventual transfer to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Foundation. That transfer would occur before Trump leaves office.
