Eric Dane, the actor widely recognized for his performances in “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Euphoria,” and “The Last Ship,” has died at the age of 53 after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, reports customreceipt.com via NPR. Representatives confirmed that he passed away Thursday from ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, less than a year after publicly disclosing his diagnosis.
In a statement released by his representatives, it was said that Dane spent his final days surrounded by close friends, his wife Rebecca Gayheart, and their daughters, Billie and Georgia. The family requested privacy. The statement noted that during his illness, Dane became a committed advocate for ALS awareness and research, determined to support others facing the disease. It also emphasized his gratitude toward fans for their continued support throughout his career and illness.
Dane rose to prominence in the mid-2000s when he was cast as Dr. Mark Sloan, known to viewers as McSteamy, on the ABC medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy.” He portrayed the character from 2006 to 2012 and briefly reprised the role in 2021. Although his character was written out following a plane crash storyline, the legacy of Mark Sloan remained integral to the series, reflected in the renaming of Seattle Grace Hospital to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
In 2019, Dane took on a markedly different role as Cal Jacobs in HBO’s drama “Euphoria,” portraying a deeply troubled character in the series. He continued appearing in the show up until his death. He also starred as Tom Chandler, the captain of a U.S. Navy destroyer navigating a global catastrophe in the TNT series “The Last Ship.” Production of the show was temporarily halted in 2017 while Dane sought treatment for depression.
In April 2025, Dane publicly announced that he had been diagnosed with ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movement. The condition gradually impairs the ability to walk, speak, eat and breathe, and most patients die within three to five years of diagnosis.
Following his diagnosis, Dane became increasingly active in raising awareness about ALS. In June 2025, he addressed a news conference in Washington focused on health insurance prior authorization, identifying himself not as a television doctor but as a patient living with ALS. In September 2025, the ALS Network honored him with its Advocate of the Year award in recognition of his efforts to increase awareness and support for people affected by the disease.
Born on November 9, 1972, Dane was raised in Northern California. His father, a Navy veteran and architect, died from a gunshot wound when Dane was seven years old. After completing high school, Dane relocated to Los Angeles to pursue acting. Early in his career, he appeared in guest roles on television series including “Saved by the Bell,” “Married…With Children,” “Charmed,” and the film “X-Men: The Last Stand,” as well as in one season of the medical drama “Gideon’s Crossing.”
A memoir by Dane titled “Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments” is scheduled for publication in late 2026. The book will be released by The Open Field, an imprint founded by Maria Shriver under Penguin Random House. According to the publisher, the memoir reflects on defining moments in Dane’s life, from his first day working on “Grey’s Anatomy” to the births of his daughters and his ALS diagnosis. In a statement about the book, Dane said he sought to document the days that shaped him, both joyful and difficult, in the hope that readers might find meaning in their own lives.
Dane is survived by his wife, actor Rebecca Gayheart, and their daughters, Billie Beatrice and Georgia Geraldine. The couple married in 2004 and separated in September 2017. Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018 but later moved to dismiss the petition. In a December essay for New York magazine’s The Cut, reflecting on Dane’s illness, Gayheart described their relationship as complex, stating that although they never finalized a divorce and lived separately while dating other people, they maintained a strong familial bond and mutual support.
