NEW YORK — Tesla has relinquished its position as the world’s leading electric vehicle manufacturer after a combination of declining sales, growing international competition, and customer dissatisfaction over CEO Elon Musk’s political stance, reports Customreceipt via the The Associated Press. The company reported that it delivered 1.64 million vehicles in 2025, representing a 9% decrease compared with the previous year.
Chinese automaker BYD overtook Tesla with 2.26 million units sold, becoming the world’s largest EV producer. Analysts had closely monitored Tesla’s performance, noting that fourth-quarter deliveries totaled 418,227 vehicles, falling short of the 440,000 units forecasted by FactSet. Observers suggested that the phase-out of a $7,500 federal tax credit in September, implemented during the Trump administration, may have contributed to the lower sales figures.
Despite these challenges, Tesla’s stock ended 2025 with an approximate 11% increase, as investors continue to anticipate CEO Elon Musk’s ambitious plans. Musk aims to expand Tesla into robotaxi services and promote the adoption of humanoid robots capable of performing basic household and office tasks. The company’s strategic initiatives, however, face scrutiny amid market competition and shifting consumer sentiment.
