Supreme Court TPS ruling has cleared the Trump administration to cancel Temporary Protected Status for Haitians and Syrians, exposing more than 350,000 Haitians and about 6,000 Syrians to possible deportation, as Baltimore Chronicle notes.
Supreme Court TPS ruling changes immigration protection
In a 6-3 decision, the Court said DHS has broad authority to decide when TPS designations end. Justice Samuel Alito wrote that federal courts generally cannot review those termination decisions.
TPS gives legal work authorization and deportation protection to people from countries hit by war, disaster or extraordinary instability. The decision may affect the wider TPS system, which covers about 1.3 million people from 17 countries.

Why lawyers warn of a wider human cost
Attorneys for Haitian plaintiffs said the ruling could put families in direct danger if they are returned to Haiti. The country remains gripped by gang violence, weak state control and economic collapse.
Key groups affected now include:
- Haitian TPS holders who arrived after the 2010 earthquake;
- Syrian nationals protected during years of civil war;
- employers relying on legally authorized workers;
- families with children born in the United States.
The ruling also strengthens the administration’s position in other TPS terminations. Advocates called it a warning sign for immigrants from countries still facing deep crises.
Political and legal fallout after the decision
Justice Elena Kagan, dissenting, argued that courts should still be able to review whether DHS followed required procedures. She also pointed to racially charged statements made by Donald Trump about Haitians.
Some Republicans also criticized the result. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said deporting Haitians from Springfield and other communities would be a mistake because many had worked legally and supported local economies.
The ruling does not immediately deport every TPS holder. But it removes a major legal barrier and shifts pressure to Congress, where immigrant advocates are demanding statutory protection.
