What Health Officials Know About Cyclosporiasis

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. Fresh produce has been associated with earlier outbreaks, including lettuce, herbs, raspberries, and snow peas.

Common symptoms include:

  • watery diarrhea;
  • appetite loss and weight loss;
  • stomach cramps and bloating;
  • nausea, fatigue, and increased gas;
  • occasional fever, vomiting, or headaches.

Symptoms can disappear and later return. Untreated illness may continue for several weeks or longer. People with persistent diarrhea should contact a healthcare provider for testing.

The ingredient removals do not represent proof that Taco Bell caused the outbreak. Investigators are still reviewing supply chains and food exposure histories.
