Former NFL star Chris Johnson has revealed his ALS diagnosis after the disease rapidly changed his mobility and speech. The former Tennessee Titans running back received the diagnosis in 2025, aged 39, as the customreceipt.com editorial team notes.
Chris Johnson’s first ALS symptoms
Johnson told Good Morning America that weakness in his right hand was the first warning sign. His grip felt different, although he remained active and exercised daily.
His wife, Brittany, initially suspected a pinched nerve or damage linked to football. Further examinations instead confirmed sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, with no known family history.
Johnson described several major changes since his diagnosis:
- he can no longer hold a cup;
- he has lost much of his physical independence;
- he uses an eye-controlled speech device;
- his recorded voice is reproduced by the device.
The former player said the illness progressed faster than he expected. Just one year earlier, he could still lift his young daughter.

ALS treatment and family support
Johnson receives standard ALS medication and has participated in an experimental clinical trial. Neurologist Dr Merit Cudkowicz said the tested therapy targeted inflammation and may have helped him.
| Key detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Diagnosis | Sporadic ALS |
| First symptom | Weakness in the right hand |

There is no known cure for ALS. Existing treatments may slow progression and help patients maintain their quality of life.
Johnson credits Brittany and their four children with sustaining his determination. “ALS has changed what my body can do, but it hasn’t changed who I am,” he said.
Chris Johnson calls for better ALS research
The three-time Pro Bowl selection is now supporting fundraising for ALS research at the Healey & AMG Center. He wants faster diagnosis, stronger treatments and greater public understanding.
Johnson also stressed that physical disability does not erase identity, thought or emotion. He remains focused on his family while using his story to push medical research forward.
