Why Miami Dolphins Released Tua Tagovailoa After $212M Contract: Injuries and Future Plans

Miami Dolphins release quarterback Tua Tagovailoa after six seasons, $212M contract, injuries, and limited playoff success as team looks for a new QB.

The Miami Dolphins have officially decided to part ways with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa as the NFL free agency period begins, reports customreceipt.com via Fox News. Tagovailoa, who was drafted fifth overall by Miami in the 2020 NFL Draft, has experienced a career marked by both promise and injury setbacks. The decision comes after two consecutive seasons in which he struggled with health issues and inconsistent performance, limiting his appearances on the field.

Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan stated, “I recently informed Tua and his representation that we are going to move in a new direction at the quarterback position and will be releasing him after the start of the new league year. As I shared with Tua, I have great respect for the person and player he is. On behalf of the Miami Dolphins, I expressed our gratitude for his many contributions, both on the field and in the community, during his six seasons in Miami. As we move forward, we will be focused on infusing competition across the roster and establishing a strong foundation for this team as we work towards building a sustained winner.”

Tagovailoa, who signed a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension prior to the 2024 season, will be designated as a post-June 1 release, resulting in $99 million in dead cap space for Miami, spread over the next two seasons, according to ESPN. Over six seasons with the Dolphins, Tagovailoa amassed 18,166 passing yards and 120 touchdowns, but injuries in 2024 and 2025 kept him largely sidelined. He has only once played a full 16-game season in his career and made a single playoff appearance in 2023 when Miami finished 11-6.

The Dolphins enter the 2026 season under new leadership, with a new general manager and head coach Jeff Hafley, aiming to reset the quarterback position and build a more competitive roster. The team will now seek a replacement to lead the offense into the upcoming NFL campaign.
