Tax season has officially started, and Americans who overpaid taxes last year or qualify for refundable credits could see refunds arriving in the coming weeks, reports customreceipt.com, via MoneyFOX 5 DC. Taxpayers began submitting returns for the 2025 tax year when the filing period opened on January 26, and many are preparing to receive refunds for overpayments, Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit (CTC), and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC).
The IRS reports that electronically filed returns with direct deposit can expect refunds within 21 days or less. Paper returns or those requiring corrections, amendments, or additional review may take four weeks or longer. While the IRS continues to reduce paper check distributions, checks will still be issued if no electronic payment options are available.
For taxpayers claiming EITC, CTC, or ACTC with direct deposit, the IRS anticipates refunds will be accessible by March 2. Those filing paper returns can expect a longer processing period, with status updates available through the IRS online tool “Where’s My Refund?” 24 hours after electronic submission, and within four weeks for mailed returns.
Some taxpayers may experience delays due to workforce reductions at the IRS in recent years, though straightforward filings typically proceed without issues. It is recommended to submit returns electronically with direct deposit to minimize wait times and ensure faster receipt of refunds.
