Amazon has confirmed that its massively multiplayer online game, New World, will be officially taken offline on all platforms starting January 31, 2027, reports customreceipt.com via 127tro.kh.ua. The game has been delisted from all digital storefronts, meaning it is no longer available for purchase. Players can continue to access New World throughout 2026, with the Nighthaven season extended until the servers are permanently shut down.
A statement on the New World website expressed gratitude to the player community: “We want to thank the players for your dedication and passion. We are grateful for the time spent crafting the world of Aeternum with you. Together we built something special. While we are saddened to say goodbye, we’re honored that we were able to share so much with the community. It has been our pleasure to work on New World: Aeternum and evolve this unforgettable adventure with you all. We look forward to one more year together, and giving this fantastic adventure a sendoff worthy of a legendary hero. From the bottom of all our hearts, thank you for sharing this world with us.”
Amazon initially announced in October 2025 that New World would enter maintenance mode, coinciding with layoffs affecting 14,000 employees across the company. At that time, the company confirmed the MMO would remain accessible throughout 2026.
New World represented a rare success for Amazon Games, which had previously faced multiple high-profile studio closures and game cancellations. The MMO, set in an alternate version of 1600s America, reached a peak of 913,634 concurrent players on Steam in 2021, though active player numbers declined sharply after that peak.
Reports from Bloomberg highlighted that Amazon was scaling back on massively multiplayer online projects but would continue development on titles including March of Giants by Amazon Games Montreal, the new Tomb Raider game at Crystal Dynamics, and several casual and AI-driven projects for its Luna cloud gaming service. The UK-based Maverick Games studio also continues work on its racing game. Following the New World shutdown announcement, the future of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings MMO remains unclear, with no official updates provided.
In response to the shutdown news, Alistair McFarlane, COO and company director at Rust developer Facepunch Studios, offered to purchase New World for $25 million, tweeting, “Games should never die.” Simon Collins-Laflamme, founder of Hypixel Studios, which revived Hytale after years of uncertainty at Riot Games, responded with advice on acquiring canceled games. McFarlane emphasized community-driven longevity for online games, explaining that New World could thrive if servers were publicly hostable and players were given more control.
