Ashes of Creation Co-Founder Steven Sharif Quits as Intrepid Studios Issues Mass Layoffs, MMO Future Uncertain

Ashes of Creation co-founder Steven Sharif resigns amid Intrepid Studios board disputes and mass layoffs, putting the MMO's future in serious jeopardy.

The future of the MMORPG Ashes of Creation has entered uncertainty following the resignation of its creative director and studio co-founder, Steven Sharif, who stepped down in protest over recent decisions made by the Board of Directors, customreceipt.com via mmorpg. Sharif explained that control of the company had shifted away from him, prompting actions by the board that he could not “ethically” support. The move coincided with widespread departures among senior leadership and the initiation of mass layoffs at Intrepid Studios.

In a statement posted on the official Ashes of Creation Discord and shared by community members, Sharif said: “I can make a limited statement in my personal capacity and not on behalf of the company, regarding the situation. Control of the company shifted away from me, and the Board began directing actions that I could not ethically agree with or carry out. As a result, I chose to resign in protest rather than lend my name or authority to decisions I could not ethically support. Following my resignation, much of the senior leadership team resigned. Following those departures, the Board made the decision to issue WARN Act notices and proceed with a mass layoff. I cannot responsibly speak to further details at this time due to ongoing legal and governance matters. What I can say is that the developers and staff acted in good faith and deserved better than the uncertainty they are now facing. I am incredibly dismayed by the situation.”

Margaret Krohn, Communications Director at Intrepid Studios, confirmed via LinkedIn that multiple senior staff members had also resigned. Reddit users and LinkedIn profiles indicate that several employees have started seeking new opportunities, suggesting a broader workforce upheaval beyond the nine employees affected in earlier layoffs this month.

Reports from content creator Theory Forge indicate that WARN Act letters have been dispatched to staff through First Class mail, with the notice taking effect on February 2, 2026. According to the letter, Intrepid Studios is unable to meet payroll obligations, and the company may effectively close operations by the end of business that Monday. The authenticity of the letter is still being verified, but it reflects serious financial and operational challenges facing the studio.

The developments raise pressing questions regarding the ongoing Early Access phase of Ashes of Creation and whether the Kickstarter-backed MMO will proceed to full launch or face cancellation. If the project is halted, fulfilling refund promises to backers may become a critical issue for the company. Intrepid Studios’ PR channels remain largely unresponsive amid the unfolding crisis, leaving the gaming community and investors awaiting further clarification.
